Dark Maple theme release

My new and only theme now is officially released! When I started this blog I didn’t think I would end up one day “designing” a theme for WP. Anyway, now it is here.

The theme is based on Root’s Gemini template and he has discovered it even before the “official” release. Thanks for your nice words :)
Actually the theme was inspired by a photo of Bill Arnett. I’ve found it on the net (see his 2003 portfolio of photos), contacted him and got the permission to use it. You can see the original pic here on the right.
Full instructions in the readme file.
Have fun!
Update 02.04.2006. - The Dark Maple is ready for widgets.

I don’t know if you can do anything about this, but your theme at alexking’s site is showing up as Kubrick.

What a gorgeous theme! I have no idea how to change mine yet, lol. I have two blogs: krisandapril.blogs.com and the new one at krisandapril.us.

Thank you, April!
You are welcome to download it and use it with your WP blog.

It’s a beautiful theme, but there are some inconsistencies that I don’t like.
A couple I noticed off the top of my head:
1. There is a “Next Page” link at the bottom of every single comment, instead of just on the bottom of the page.
2. The format and location of the comment links are at the bottom of the entry on the main page, but at the top of the entry in the archives page.
I didn’t spend enough time on the theme to spot any more problems.

Paul,
Thanks for stopping by. Re: #1 I know about it, just have to correct in the zip file. About #2 I could argue, but on the other hand it’s quite easy to change. I’ll think about it.
And thank you for using the theme :)

I’m a total newbie at blogging, coding, and everything associated with the two endeavors, so I’m having a hard time figuring out how to edit/put content into the “About” link underneath the photo at the top of the page.
If possible, explaining it as though you’re walking a 10 year old through the process would be most helpful! :)
Thanks in advance, and thank your for the skin. It is beautiful.

Using a modified version of your theme on my site - mostly fiddled with the color scheme and used Maple as the basis for the layout. It’s a great theme; despite the inconsistencies mentioned, it has a very clean layout. Thanks for making it available. :)

Jena,
I have updated the .zip file here on my site; now it contains the small corrections for errors mentioned by the users. Thanks!
Pete,
I’ll write another guide if it’s necessary, but I think the Appendix in the readme file has the answer for your question.

Thanks moshu! Works great!

hello thankyou for making such a wonderful wp-theme!
I was wondering if I could ask you about the horizontal navigation… do I have to manually make my own page for teh ‘about’ & ‘links’ or could I do it some other way?
xoxo thankyou in advance
March 21, 2005 @ 14:28 (CST)
If you read the readme.txt file you can figure out pretty well what to do for an “about or links” page. If by “manually” you mean using the WP’s built-in Write Page feature - the answer is yes!
You should write a page titled About (using the deafult Page template) and after then open the horizontal.php file and put in the link to your page.

What I really appreciate about what Moshu has done is that not only is the theme really gorgeous but it demonstrates and embraces what my Gemini template is all about. It was always meant to be robust, easy to understand and simple to edit. By changing a few colors, choosing a nice graphic, and maybe altering a font, an infinite variety of designs is possible. I have been delighted at the take up for Dark Maple. There seem to be hundreds. A really great piece of work, and a benefit to the WP community. Its time for another one Moshu :)

Thanks, Root!
I don’t know about a next one :) My priority right now would be to be able to make the polyglot plugin to work - in order to be able to post in more languages. After thet - who knows. But thanks for the encouraging.

Wow! This is a great theme for WP! I have it in my queue of available layouts, though I may not actually use it right now.
I like to download/upload a thousand at the time so when I’m feeling lazy but want to update my layout, I can.
Thanks!

Hello!
I saw your template at alexking.org and I decided to use it in my blog. The problem is:
I don’t know how to add features to the profile part, like a Guestmap or something like that, cause WP tells me “If this file was writable…”. Do you know how I can fix that?!
Congrats about your template, it’s awesome!
:)

Aninha,
Your question is not directly related to my theme, it’s a more general WP issue, more exactly something related to file permissions. Through your FTP client you can chmod the files you want to edit via the Theme Editor (chmod 666 or 664 depending on your server’s settings) or, simply you can edit the files on your computer in a text editor and then upload them.

[…] One of the great features of WordPress is the easy customization through themes and plug ins. I have just used your theme as you can see at the uri posted. I have done some minor changes hope it’s OK. One thing puzzled me is that when I click one particular category all posts under that will have images, if any, turned off, i.e. I see only text until I click individual post. How can I turn on all images if they are inside the posts?
November 9, 2005 @ 09:50 (CST)
Moshu,
When I click one category under sidebar the posts displayed have images suppressed. To see the images within a post (’cos I know it’s there) I have to click the title of that particular post. How do I make displaying of images or the complete post content by default?
Posted already in WP.org may be you’ll see this faster here.
November 9, 2005 @ 15:12 (CST)
Sfong, glad you like the theme. Any changes are OK, since it was released under GPL.
As for the archive/category listing - just search the forum, it was asked over 1,000 times :)

Hi Moshu,
Love working with Dark Marple: . I have a friend that wanted to have a place to post her writings. I’ve customized Dark Maple a bit so I could add in some static content to the homepage. I’m getting some strange results in IE for Mac. I’ve validated the CSS and the XHTML and fixed all the errors (I hope). But in IE for Mac the main image doesn’t show and the background of the sidebar is missing. For what its worth, the image and the sidebar background are missing on your blog as well in IE for Mac. The sidebar on mine was ending up below the content at one point, but found that the Technorati script was causing this and removed it.
Any help would greatly appreciated. She’s an techno-friendly “elder” woman and will abandon WordPress if I can’t get this sorted soon. I’ve fixed the errors that she was seeing and requested that she use Firefox. She’s really amazing though. Even has an ipod. but I don’t know if there is a fix for IE for Mac.
Thanks,
Tiff

Probably there isn’t any fix for IE Mac. And to be honest I don’t even bother about it. It’s a “dead” browser. See:

Yeah, I know it’s dead (thank goodness!), I just didn’t know if there was an easy fix for it. But thank you for the awesome design!
Best,
Tiff

[…] A comment posted yesterday reminded me about the update of the Dark Maple theme. A few days ago I have modified the sidebar to work with the new Widgets plugin but I forgot to post about it. I am not sure whether the calendar will work with the widgets plugin - initially it wasn’t part of the nested list structure required for it. If the feedbacks will be negative I’ll work more on it. I like it very much but I’ve a problem with the sidebar when i use iexplorer (Whith FireFox it works very well). The problem is that all the content is showed at the bottom of the page.
Can you help me?
thanks!

Without a link it is difficult to tell. Most likely there is something too wide in your sidebar (or the content area).
It is not an issue with the theme, but a problem with IE. If you search in the WP forum you will find hundreds of post about it…
For IE you cannot have anything wider than the sidebar or the content: the faulty element can be a picture, a long link, an invisible code line - anything. While FF will fit it in nicely, IE breaks and pushes the sidebar below the content to give enough room for the wide element.

Hey all — was hoping that someone could clue me in on a total n00b CSS issue:
I’m trying to customize the Random Image Theme for Wordpress, and I’m running into a small — but *incredibly annoying* — problem.
I’m trying to make the background of the content area white. The background of navigation column that runs down the right side is not plain white (FFFFFF). Rather Photoshop’s color picker claims that it’s F9F9F9 — but this isn’t anywhere in the style.css file. There is a .alt that has a background set at F8F8F8, but when I change that to FFFFFF, it doesn’t help.
Where is that shading coming from?
many thanks…

Hi Moshu! I love your theme! I compared your theme to several others in re-designing my birdclub’s site and yours won over all. You can go to the site to see what I did so far.
One question I just thought of today… Would it be possible for me to modify the horizontal menu tabs to use drop-down menus? If so, how would I implement this?
Thanks for designing an awesome theme!
August 25, 2007 @ 14:52 (CDT)
Sorry, Chris W.,
I was out of town for a several days.
You could probably replace the horizontal.php file with some drop-down script or, better, include the script into that file - although I’ve never tried. You may want to look for a plugin/script that would do what you want.
August 31, 2007 @ 13:18 (CDT)
I’m going crazy trying to fix this. The site does not look good in IE6 - it’s cut up on the side. You can see it how it renders in IE6 here: http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/index.php
I really need to know what to do in the stylesheet to fix this. Please help!! Thanks.

Rich, sorry, I don’t think there is anything theme related. All your isues are coming from:
a) your editions to the theme
b) your use of the wysiwyg editor
Alltogether, these are causing the hundreds of validation errors on your blog. Try to validate your site and go from there.
