Recently I moved the former DevBlog to a new domain moshublog.com, where I am posting my WordPress tutorials and also daily notes about the life on the Canadian Prairies. We are planning to start an affiliate program for the Start Blogging! package that is offered for beginners who don’t want to bother to learn the technical part of blogging. The package is a huge success and we want to make it available for even more potential bloggers. Stay tuned: there will be updates about the program in the coming weeks.

Dark Maple on edublogs

Edublogs.org that provides free blog for education professionals, like teachers, researchers, librarians etc. has our theme Dark Maple among the themes offered for presentation. There are, of course, many other theme too, but we are very proud that the first WP theme made by Prairie Design has been selected. You can also download it by clicking on the link in the right sidebar.

sNews added to the list

Recently we discovered a very handy, light script called sNews. It can be used as a simple blog tool or as the backend of a small business site… or for whatever is needed as a light-weight clever program.

The installation requires at least an elementary level of skills with code editing and MySQL database, but other than that it is really easy to use. The whole script is one single file! (Though with add-ons and mods it could grow to a considerable size.)

Their site http://www.solucija.com also offers several very nice free templates to use. It is not to often (actually I have never seen before) that the main developer/coder of a script is an excellent designer, too. But in the case of Luka Cvrk it just happens.

From now on for smaller sites that need to be updated periodically by their owners from a web browser we will gladly offer to install and customize sNews. We are working on such a site already, and it will be posted to the Portfolio when it is done.

Converting to WP

We just finished re-making the site using WordPress as its engine. Earlier it was built by static PHP files and now it is running on WP. This little experiment is another proof (if any is needed) for how versatile and flexible this tool is.

Basically, we use WordPress on this site as a CMS (content management system) combining the categories and “pages” features. All the existing content was added to the MySQL database as posts or Pages, and we gained even some more functionality for displaying our links to suggested resources and added small improvements.

Based on the experience of almost two years spent in the WordPress Forum we realized many first time users are totally lost when it comes installing a blogging tool. Especially if this is their first web site and they never had to deal with registering a domain, finding a host that provides the technical minimum for running WordPress etc.

However, it wouldn’t be fair to exclude from the blogging scene all those who don’t have previous experience with websites, FTP, editing code and understanding what’s going on behind the scenes when you install a blog. Yes, they could go to a free blogging service but that wouldn’t be as fulfilling as having a blog at your own domain.
